Kitchen Renovation
Montauk, New York

A relationship to the outdoors is essential to a "country house". The architectural intervention here intensifies this relationship. At the same time, the kitchen was made to seem more spacious: floor-to-ceiling height elements, containing refrigerator and stemwarm cabinet, were positioned in a niche on a plane with the fireplace, so that the remaining space was a clearly-defined rectangle. Above the height of the countertop, the stemware cabinet is entirely glazed. Perpendicular to the cabinet is the house's primary circulation axis, which virtually intersects the glazed cabinet through an internal window on to the "still life" of glasses and vases. The window also allows for a view through the entire house into the garden, and towards the setting sun, seen from the dining table.
